Obstetric fistula is a devastating, preventable birth injury that can be cured by a trained surgeon
It's estimated that almost 2 million women suffer from an entirely preventable condition called obstetric fistula purely due to the fact that they are impoverished and have no access to quality emergency obstetric care (UNFPA) An obstetric fistula is a traumatic birth injury caused by unrelieved obstructed labor. obstructed labor is one of the top killers of pregnant women globally, and in the event a women survives the labor, 90% babies are stillborn.
Safe and quality surgical repair and training will help eradicate and prevent obstetric fistulas
The actual number of fistula cases in Liberia is not known, however it is estimated to be in the 1000's with a marked increase post-Ebola crisis when hospitals were not open do emergency cesarean sections. There are not enough trained surgeons in Liberia to care for all these women. Learning the skill of fistula surgery comes from proper training by expert surgeons and careful mentorship and guidance. All our fistula surgeons are experts with experience in hundreds of cases.
Formal didactics based on a training curriculum and hands-on lessons for physicians-in-training and nursing students are a cornerstone to training. Over a 12 month campaign, we'll be in Liberia every 3-4 mo, 2-3 wks/trip, planning to perform approx. 25-30 operations each time, for a total of 75-90. This is complimented by a curriculum designed uniquely for Liberia, accounting for unique health and equipment challenges. Surgeons in training have very little exposure to formal fistula training.
To compliment physician and nursing training in this issue, we'll teach and introduce safety protocols in the operating room and on wards. We also discuss prevention of fistula with an emphasis on community awareness and educational sessions in the rehabilitation center where women spend up to 3-6 months in recovery learning a new trade and literacy.
Supporting fistula surgery training allows treatment for 100's of women in the future
Fistula is a catastrophic condition that profoundly impacts a woman's life. Treatment is surgery and there are simply not enough surgeons trained in competent repair. Our program in Liberia partners with local entities to ensure a long term solution to fistula treatment. Training safe fistula surgeons has a lasting impact on affected communities for years. We are grateful to Liberian women for trusting us with their care and committed to training the next generation of Liberian fistula surgeons.
15%- Operating room generator fuel
12%-Health education for patients
10%-Feeding support staff
3%-TBD% required for stripe fee
2%-Transporting local volunteers
This displays the maximum incremental additional funding the campaign could receive (Maximum Funding Amount (MFA) less Minimum Funding Goal)). For example, if the MFA is $100,000 and the MFG $10,000, it would show the difference of $90,000 here.
50%-More healthcareworker training
50%-More surgical supplies
