Since 2014, the U.S. has received over 260,000 unaccompanied minors seeking protection from violence
Making it to the United States is not the end of their journey. Many of these children must cope with the trauma endured in their home countries – including child abuse, persecution, trafficking, or other kinds of violence - AND the trauma of their voyage. Furthermore, nearly 70,000 migrant children have been held in government custody this year. Without adequate support, these experiences can have a lasting effect on a child’s health, development and well-being.
Why We Act
Play therapy will dramatically improve the prospects of clients in New Jersey.
Last year, we raised $20,000 to support KIND’s Play Therapy program in Newark. Play therapy is a therapeutic approach that has been a boon to KIND’s young clients who have survived significant and often multiple traumas. The project has been so successful that there have been requests to expand to other nearby locations. By sharing learnings from this program at national conferences, this project can be a model for others around the country.
Your gift will help children live free from fear.
Funding will allow KIND to continue the Play Therapy Project with NJCU at their current location and expand to Elizabeth or Plainfield, both areas where a concentrated number of clients meet the criteria for participating. Funding would be allocated to cover staff time, space rental, supplies, transportation, and a small stipend for the play therapist. KIND would also allocate funds to cover travel costs associated with presenting at national conferences so others may learn about this model.
