Give Clear Vision To School Children In Remote Botswana

Our goal
We seek funds to supply a complete vision kit for eyeglasses distribution to 9 schools in Botswana.
The Challenge

Most of the Global South has no access to basic vision care and eyeglasses.

There are an estimated 2.5 billion people in the world without access to prescription eyeglasses. In addition to the fundamental impairment to quality of life for those affected, economic losses due to lower productivity, education, health and safety and other factors are estimated to be $1,700 per individual per year – more than $2 trillion in lost global economic output.

Our Solution

Our Vision Kit eliminates the logistic hurdles to basic vision care in the Global South.

The USee™ is the core component of the GV2020 vision kit. It consists of two graded lens refraction bars in a glasses-like frame. An individual who may need correction wears the USee and dials the lens bars up or down while viewing the standard eye chart provided in the kit. The lens bars have a colored index to indicate the power correction within a quarter diopter, that provides the best visual acuity for each eye. The colored index on the device corresponds to an array of snap-in lenses.

With just one day of training, field personnel are able to screen, diagnose, prescribe, and assemble the appropriate eyeglasses for the people they serve. That individual then reads the chart again to confirm that the correct lenses are in place and then departs with a new pair of eyeglasses. The simplicity of the platform lends itself to a wide variety of potential distribution paths and partners.

Success of the USee in “self-refraction” compared to standard refraction was demonstrated in a clinical trial at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University. There is no device in existence that combines the accuracy, low cost, and ease of use of the USee. A complete kit including frames, lenses and eye charts. GV2020 offers partners an opportunity to address uncorrected refractive error (URE) in their communities. URE is the most common cause of preventable visual impairment globally.

Your Impact

A $5 donation provides a pair of eyeglasses to a student

A recent study found that the easiest intervention to perform that increased the learning of an entire classroom was to screen for, and provide eyeglasses to the students that needed them. Your donation will help provide eyeglasses to students living in rural Botswana. We know that a child's ability to see clearly directly impacts their ability to learn, and their overall quality of life.

$4,738 Minimum Funding Goal
  • 42%-Documentary material

  • 32%-Vision Kit

  • 23%-Shipping of kit to Africa

  • 3%-Stripe Fee

$2,060 Campaign Booster Funding

This displays the maximum incremental additional funding the campaign could receive (Maximum Funding Amount (MFA) less Minimum Funding Goal)). For example, if the MFA is $100,000 and the MFG $10,000, it would show the difference of $90,000 here.

  • 97%-Vehicle expenses (fuel, etc.)

  • 3%-Stripe Fee
