Families living with cancer in our region are struggling with basic necessities and treatment costs.
According to the American Cancer Society, cancer is the leading cause of death among Hispanics. The Paso del Norte region is comprised of 6 counties/municipalities in Texas, New Mexico and Chihuahua, Mexico. The residents in these areas are predominantly Hispanic, poor, lack health insurance, and have a disproportionate burden from cancer.
After a diagnosis of cancer, families suffer because in addition to the stress of dealing with cancer, they have loss of income and are unable to afford basic needs such as food and housing.
Providing funding and resources to families with cancer in order to lessen the impact of cancer.
By providing support for cancer-related expenses for families, we are easing the burden and stress that families feel after a diagnosis. Because our population is socioeconomically disadvantaged, the burden of cancer is exacerbated by being unable to work and provide for the family, thereby increasing the stress of the family in covering rent, utilities, and other living expenses. We also help by navigating cancer patients to available resources or services in the communities where they live.
For every $100 donated, an additional family can be helped to meet important needs.
Many cancer patients cannot afford co-pays required for an oncologist, surgeon, or their life-saving surgery. Transportation and childcare barriers further limit access to care. Your donation will help patients and their families with medical and non-medical expenses, easing several stressors. To-date, we have covered surgery co-pays and held garage sales to assist with rent. We hope to ultimately improve the overall health and well-being of the Paso del Norte region, one family at a time.
