Ultrasound technology is essential for health care provision in this community
In the Kayong Utara Regency (home to more than 120,000 people) where our partner Alam Sehat Lestari (ASRI) is located, our hospital is the only medical facility with an ultrasound. People are poor, often living on $2 a day, so, while ultrasounds are crucial for healthy pregnancies (as well as serving other diagnostic purposes), they can be prohibitively expensive for most families. Our clinic makes care affordable through a barter system to pay for medical bills - nobody is ever turned away.

New ultrasound probes provide care for Borneo moms
Our current ultrasound machine has broken past repair. We've discovered a new option with external probes that connect to an imaging app on a phone or tablet. This system will be much better adapted to a tropical climate than traditional machines, simple to use, and easier to fix with almost no interruptions in care, as we'll have multiple probes.

Providing this setting-appropriate diagnostic technology will mean that our hospital can continue caring for moms, babies, and families with compassion and skill, improving the overall health in the region. Since our hospital is the only facility with the capacity for an ultrasound in the region, it is critical for us to have access to this technology.
