We anticipate the mental health implications from COVID-19 will be staggering.
The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently addressed the concern of experts in the following article: “Lockdown is the world's biggest psychological experiment - and we will pay the price.” The White House, speaking with mental health advocates about COVID-19, recently noted that calls to the National Distress Hotline have increased 890% over the past year, and calls to the National Suicide Hotline have increased over 300% just in recent weeks.
These are just some examples of many discussing the psychological impact of this crisis. Anxiety resulting from lost jobs and social isolation alone are, indeed, staggering. Then numbers of those suffering from depression and anxiety as a result of people getting sick – personally, or having family members become ill and even dying; possibly alone, are growing. And the list goes on.
Prior to this crisis, approximately 96% of our clients received some level of subsidized support through insurance, sliding scale payments, grant funded programs and fundraising. As we consider the grave and unknown financial impact of the current crisis, we anticipate current clients in addition to new clients will have difficulty affording therapy at rates they might have previously been able to afford.
Because of COVID-19, TCS is proactively preparing to be available for our community.
In reviewing research conducted after recent crisis events, our Initiative will run for 6-months and could begin as soon as it is funded - meaning we could start this work while in remote status. On average, TCS clients are seen for approximately 10 sessions and we believe this is a good benchmark for this Initiative. After a client completes their 10th session, they have the option of additional sessions through our General Counseling program. The organization's total cost per session is $155.
As we consider the grave and unknown financial impact of COVID-19, we anticipate current and new clients will have difficulty affording therapy at rates they might have previously afforded. As a result, we have proposed a flat $5 payment per session which is a common fee for those needing the most financial assistance. But clients seen in the COVID-19 Initiative who qualify under the annual TCS Childhood Intervention Initiative (CII) would not pay per session, as that is a fully funded program.
Funding will also provide resources for unanticipated costs to continue serving via remote status and as we transition back to a face-to-face model. On March 13, with HIPAA compliant policies and procedures, TCS clinicians notified every current client that the organization was moving to remote status. Three weeks into this pandemic, clients and our community had full access to TCS and all services via remote access – therapy, referrals and virtual resources (Town Hall, social media, website).
Your donation will provide start up funding to allow this Initiative to begin right away.
Our larger goal is to raise $100,000 total through multiple sources - CaringCrowd, foundations and others to support approximately 50 clients in 500 sessions, provide specialized trauma training for clinicians, fund telemedicine and unanticipated remote status costs. Your gift provides initial resources to allow this work to start sooner. Because costs for this initiative do not increase as additional funds are raised, more funding received for this Initiative allows more people to be served.

This displays the maximum incremental additional funding the campaign could receive (Maximum Funding Amount (MFA) less Minimum Funding Goal)). For example, if the MFA is $100,000 and the MFG $10,000, it would show the difference of $90,000 here.
