let's work together to

Provide Flu Vaccinations for Uninsured/Underinsured

Our goal
To provide convenient and affordable flu vaccinations for uninsured/underinsured populations.
The Challenge

Influenza is prevented with annual flu vaccinations yet coverage rates are low.

On February 1, 2003, 5 1/2 year old Alana Yaksich spent the day with her parents and brothers watching movies, eating sundaes and playing. Alana enjoyed the afternoon feeling healthy and surrounded by her friends and family.  Later that evening, Alana developed a 106-degree fever and was rushed to the emergency room.  Within hours of her arrival at the local hospital, Alana died of flu-related complications that caused swelling and injury to her brain.  Alana had not received a flu vaccination.

In 2009 Alana’s family established Alana's Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to flu education and awareness so no family has to experience the death of a loved one to a vaccine preventable disease.

Their mission is to "educate the public about the importance of yearly influenza vaccinations and in doing so, increase vaccination rates by providing CONVENIENT and AFFORDABLE FLU VACCINATION options as well as provide support for families that have lost a child."

Influenza (flu), is a highly contagious viral respiratory infection and a serious DISEASE with a major BURDEN on public health worldwide.

Every flu season is different, and flu can affect people differently. It is estimated flu attacks 5-10% of adults and 20-30% of children while causing significant levels of illness, hospitalization and up to one million deaths every year.

Even healthy people can get very sick and spread it to others.

An annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to reduce your risk of getting sick and spreading it to others. When more people get vaccinated against the flu, the less flu can spread.

Less flu spread leads to healthier communities, more productive workplaces, and fewer absences from school.

A yearly flu vaccination is now recommended by the CDC for everyone 6 months and older.

Yet despite the recommendation and benefits, flu vaccination coverage remains low for all ages.

Cost and inconvenience are often cited as barriers to getting a flu vaccine. By funding vaccinations, Alana's Foundation is able to remove the cost barrier and make them convenient and accessible.

Our Solution

Provide convenient and affordable flu vaccinations options to underserved populations

Every flu season, Alana's Foundation sponsors flu vaccination clinics at schools, churches and various community locations to allow anyone who wants to receive a flu vaccination has convenient access to getting one.  Flu vaccinations are FREE to all that participate, insured, uninsured and underinsured. Vaccine recipients incur no fees or out of pocket costs.

Your Impact

Donating just $10 helps protect one person against influenza.

Your donation will help Alana's Foundation offer FREE flu vaccinations to uninsured/underinsured populations that may not get vaccinated otherwise.  The more members of our community that are vaccinated against influenza, the more we protect those that cannot get vaccinated (i.e. infants under 6 months of age or immunocompromised individuals) because the spread of contagious disease is contained. Together we can reduce the threat of dying from a vaccine preventable disease and save lives.

$7,000 Minimum Funding Goal
  • 49%-Cost of 330 doses of vaccine

  • 35%-Vaccine assistance grants

  • 10%-Nurse administration

  • 4%-Communication/printing

  • 2%-CC processing fees
