COVID-19 has left rural families without consistent access to food.
What if we could support farmers, strengthen local food systems, and feed those most in need with fresh, local food during the pandemic? The Hub on the Hill is doing just that, but we need your help to continue! In addition to lost jobs and other challenges posed by COVID-19, many families in the Adirondack region live in food deserts where access to fresh food is difficult and sometimes impossible. Many lack reliable transportation and some have none at all.
According to Feeding America, more than 54 million people nationally, including 19 million children, may experience food insecurity because of COVID-19 in 2020. Feeding America estimates that on average Adirondack communities will face a 50% increase compared to 2018.
The Hub on the Hill has stepped up to make sure these families are fed, while ensuring a vibrant and reliable supply chain. However, due to the increased need for food deliveries - including to institutions and grocers from the Canadian Border to Southern NY - we have put extra strain on our delivery fleet. With the support of volunteer vehicles, and despite breakdowns and numerous costly repairs, we've been able to meet demand, but it's time to invest in the future health of our food system.
Emergency Food Packages & Mobile Market Delivery
In late March, the Hub on the Hill partnered with AdkAction to create an Emergency Food Package program in response to the new, unmet food access needs created by the pandemic. Each package contains 15 healthy meals for local individuals and families facing food insecurity. The food is purchased from local farms, then prepared and delivered using local labor, including furloughed food industry workers, at no cost to the recipients.
To date, the Hub on the Hill has delivered over 3,000 EFPs - or about 45,000 meals - to the doorsteps of local families. Roughly 20 farms and 75 farmworkers have been supported by this project already, putting more than $100,000 into the local agricultural economy. In order to continue this important program, while supplying the institutions and grocers who also rely on us, we need to purchase two new delivery vehicles.
Creativity and community support have been a big part of our success. In the past, we’ve borrowed and bartered to make things work, we’ve retrofitted vehicles ourselves to include solar panels and refrigeration units, and relied on volunteer support and vehicles. However, as we look to continue and expand this work, we know it’s time to invest newer, more reliable delivery trucks to meet the needs of our community and ensure a vibrant food system for years to come.

These trucks will ensure dependable deliveries for families in need, not to mention reliability for the farmers we work with. The pandemic has proven how critical food systems are to the health and well-being of our communities, and the Hub is proudly committed to supporting ours from the farmers to the family table.
