Many Hospitals lack sufficient Ventilators to treat patients with COVID 19
The corona virus attacks people’s lungs, in some cases compromising their ability to breathe as they develop pneumonia. Ventilators, which deliver air to the lungs through a tube placed in the windpipe, are crucial to keep these patients alive. India has an estimated 40,000 working ventilators, a number experts said will be inadequate in case there is a surge in Covid-19 infections that, in approximately 5% of the cases, sends patients to intensive care units (ICU) with acute breathing problems.
Provide pediatric ventilators to hospitals for treating COVID 19 patients
RespirAID [portable ventilator] is a Automated Respiratory Assist device developed by Biodesign Innovation Labs that is an alternative for prolonged manual ventilation of AMBU bags or BVM used during within hospital transit of patient or during transit in Ambulances, operation theaters with anaesthesia. It delivers intermittent positive pressure ventilation. Automating the process of hand ventilation is achieved through simple mechanics, hence will keep the costs and skill requirement low.
It is easy to maintain the device as it utilizes existing medical grade compression components and simple mechanics. Various sensors are used to detect the working conditions of the
system and a feedback loop is introduced to update the working as per requirements. This is can be used for the existing COVID 19 situations as it can stabilize the patients with respiratory distress, Pneumonia and ARDS conditions.
These ventilators can continue to be used for babies in distress, even after the current crisis is over, thus helping Ekam reduce infant mortality rate.
