Students don't know where to turn for help with mental health conditions
One in five people, including children and youth, have a mental health condition. But only half get the treatment they need, according to the National Institutes of Mental Health.
This is often because students, parents, and teachers don't understand the signs of a mental health problem. Withdrawal from friends and hobbies, a sudden lack of hygiene, and weight gain or loss can be chalked up to "typical teen behavior" when they are actually symptoms of a mental health problem.
Some students who suspect they or a loved one is struggling with a mental health problem may be too ashamed to ask for help because of the stigma. Or, they may not know where or how to ask for help.
Time to talk
Our awareness program will help students know where to turn for help
NAMI's Ending the Silence program educates students, teachers, and parents to see the signs and act more quickly. The 50-minute presentations are offered in middle and high schools and are taught by a young adult with a lived experience with mental illness.
Ending the Silence is effective in increasing knowledge and changing attitudes about mental illness. And, it teaches audience members how to seek help for themselves or a loved one.
This project will be carried out among NAMI Florida's 26 affiliates throughout the state. With money raised for this project, we can reach up to 2,000 students in 10 school districts throughout Florida. And, we can build the capacity to sustain the Ending the Silence program long beyond the lifespan of this funding.
Ending the Silence
By donating just $25, you can literally change -- and save -- lives
In Florida, the third leading cause of death for individuals aged 10 to 24 is suicide. Through Ending the Silence, students will learn the steps for getting help for themselves or a loved one. This can change the course of a young person's life -- and even save their life.
