Saving mothers who are trafficked or in sex work from maternal death
There are millions of mothers who are trafficked or support their children through sex work. Their situations are unknown to most of the world. This must change: just as the world is aware of many other issues that have a disproportionate impact on poor, vulnerable women, we must protect millions of mothers who are trafficked or in sex work from maternal mortality. The first step to protecting them is to raise awareness.
Save mothers who are trafficked or in sex work
There are two important principles here: (1) There can be no action without awareness and (2) donors cannot fund what they do not know about. The first step to prevent maternal deaths among millions of poor and vulnerable women who are trafficked or in sex work is to raise awareness about these deaths: without awareness we cannot get the funding that is needed to prevent these deaths.
A pregnant woman in a brothel. Without quality prenatal care she, like millions of other women in this situation, may die.
Prevent maternal deaths of women who are trafficked or in sex work
As noted, we need awareness to get action. We know awareness leads to action: until recently there was little awareness about female genital mutilation (FGM), which impacts millions of girls. But now, thanks to this awareness, the British government donated $50 million to prevent FGM. We must do the same thing: increase awareness about maternal deaths among women who are trafficked or in sex work so they can receive prenatal care and safe delivery and be protected from maternal mortality.
We have been to the Women Deliver Conferences and know we can reach thousands of global leaders at the 2019 Conference.
